Tapering quetiapine (my first question here)

July 24, 2026··
Hi, My first post/question on this forum. My son restarted his quetiapine taper 1 month ago. He came from 600 mg three years ago. He suffered PWS for one year I guess (my son's doctor for mentally handicapped does not have much knowledge about tapering). He has a lot of problems from the quetiapine like dystonia/dyskinesia. We microtapered one pill of 6,25 mg by microtapering with suspension, 2,5 ml in parst of 0,1 ml a day. That is 7,6 % in 25 days. Is there anything at all one can say about how long it will take to reach 0 mg? image Are there known ranges (below 25 mg?) where one has to go below in my case that 7,6 %? Or areas where one can go a little faster (below say 2 mg?) Following a scheme with 7,6 % all the time would cost almost 6 years (see below my sig), without stabilisation periods. Kind regards, Stefan. Thanks, but I had very specific questions about this curve in the case of quetapine. I know the general principles .

"Is there anything at all one can say about how long it will take to reach 0 mg?" — @Stefan
Hi @Stefan, The length of the taper is going depend on how your son is handling the reductions. There may be times when his dose might have to be held for a few months until any withdrawal symptoms improve. He doesn't want to continue pushing through his taper if he's already experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Yes, a slow Hyperbolic taper can indeed take many years if the person's nervous system requires it. Staying stable is more important than cessation of a drug. I hope that helps to answer your question! Catina 💜

Thanks @Catina and @Based Psychiatrist, I know this too, we have made some mistakes in the past but we learned on the way. We will maybe visit a psychiatrist specialised in tapering. It is mainly the doctor for mentally handicapped of my son that is unexpeerienced in tapering which can hardly believe this could take so long + of cause I would appreciate more answers by some experienced with quetiapine. Kind regards, Stefan.

You're very welcome @Stefan. I'm sorry for the position you and your son are in. I hope you're able to find a psychiatrist who specializes in tapering, but there aren't many who do. The knowledge that you'll get from Taper Community is based on the principles of Hyperbolic Tapering, which has proven to be the safest way to taper psychiatric drugs. You can always purchase a copy of The Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, which goes into more detail about this. There are times when a faster taper may be needed, such as if someone is having a severe life-threatening adverse reaction to a drug, but most of the time a Hyperbolic taper of no more than 10% a month from the previous month's dose is best. Here is some information about Seroquel from our Community: https://taper.community/drugs/seroquel Please keep us updated on how things are going with your son.
