New To Tapering? Start Here — The Most Important Things To Know

Whether you're planning your first reduction or three years into a slow taper, this is a good place to get oriented. The single most important concept: withdrawal is not relapse. When symptoms emerge after a dose reduction, the instinct (and often the doctor's advice) is to assume the underlying condition is returning. In most cases during an active taper, it's not. It's your nervous system adapting to a lower dose of a drug it has reorganized around. The difference matters enormously because the response is opposite: Relapse → may need to increase dose or change medication Withdrawal → needs time, stability, and patience. Often: do nothing. A few principles that guide most successful tapers: Hyperbolic tapering — reduce by a percentage of your current dose, not your original dose. 10% of 20mg is 2mg. 10% of 10mg is 1mg. The steps get smaller as you go lower because receptor occupancy works on a curve, not a line. The Learn section has a full module on this. Hold when symptomatic — if you're in a wave, the answer is almost never to keep reducing. Hold your current dose until you've had 2-4 weeks of stability. Slower is faster — people who rush almost always have to slow down or reinstate. People who go slowly almost always finish. It's is somex pharma and found the list of other ingredients ! Microcrystalline cellulose ,starch , sodium starch glycol ate , magnesium stearate , and silicon dioxide ,, geez no wonder the pharmacist told me not to interfere with the capsules ! Ugh

Thank you for sharing that information. You might want to see if you can be prescribed a liquid version; that will make it easier to taper. Is your doctor supportive?

Venlafaxine (tapering) - Current dose 17.92 mg
Trazodone - 50 mg
Levothyroxine - 25 mcg

Question: can ya'll share experience, strength and hope about the taper process? I'm on 1 mg of paroxetine and my taper plan is saying 3 MORE YEARS of tapering!!!!! What? I know it gets harder the lower you go. And I stopped paxil before at 1 mg and six month later was hit with extreme akathasia and insomnia. But I also must balance that I'm always sick while ON paroxetine. I have chronic infections so bad that I'm mostly home-bound (chronic infections are a side effect of all SSRI's...I have been suffering them for 25 years...no matter which SSRI I have taken. Thank you dear God that I finally found a doctor that explained this to me and is helping me get off.) Clear as mud? Any thoughts?

atypical in presentation of side effects, super sensitive to small doses and general delayed responder. never took a psych med that didn't' make me sick immediately with infections and restless legs. have never been able to tolerate being on them, but have never had support to get off so I've been bouncing back and forth. i don't like capital letters. sorry.

Paxil — 1 mg — 2 yrs — holding until Oct. 7 doc appt.
Seroquel — 50 — planning taper |
trileptal -75 planning taper
prasozin 1 mg planning taper

P.S. I'm also trying to balance getting off my other meds. I don't want to stay on seroquel, for instance for another 3 years. Yikes.

I really feel for the position you're in @marz. All I can say is that it's better to take your time and give your brain plenty of time to adjust, even if it takes longer than we'd like it to. It sucks and it's not fair, but it is what it is. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of infections have you been dealing with while on SSRIs? What sort of tapering plan do you have in place? I'm so glad you have found a supportive doctor, that's amazing! It's great to have that professional support.

The taper planner just takes 10% cuts as a basis. Technically if you only cut 10% it can go forever. So dont worry. The lower you are the easier itll get to jump to 0, but just as a precaution i put it so that it doesnt suggest jumping to 0 too early. Its all completely up to you to do as you wish. The taper planner is just a template.

@Based thank you...I thought that might be the case....lol @Catina I have constant sinus infections...which the side effects insert describes as "chronic upper respiratory infections that might never go away." Wow. so I'm a poster child for that one. :) I also suffer really bad restless legs, which defeats the "I need help sleeping" purpose of all the meds they put me on. I also have muscle pain and horrible fatigue. All this kicks in as soon as the medicine reaches therapeutic dose. In other words, once the akathasia got better, I also started getting sick again..restless legs, etc. As far as a tapering plan I've been using something called "Brass Monkey." Slow cuts, holding two weeks except holding 4 weeks every 4 cuts.

That's terrible! I didn't know this was possible, but I guess nothing surprises me anymore with these drugs.

I'm familiar with this from Surviving Antidepressants. It can be too fast for some people, so just keep a pulse on things.
