Seeking advice: Psychiatrist’s taper plan for 13 years on 90mg Cymbalta (Duloxetine) with Prozac bridge
October 2, 2026··
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for feedback on a tapering plan my psychiatrist just prescribed for me.
Background:
* Medication: Cymbalta (Duloxetine), 90 mg/day
* Duration: 13 years
* Never tried to taper before
The Doctor's Proposed Schedule:
* Drop to 60 mg/day starting on Day 4 of my next menstrual cycle, for 2 weeks.
* Drop to 30 mg/day for another 2 weeks.
* Transition phase (10 days): Take Prozac (Fluoxetine) every day while taking 30 mg Cymbalta every other day.
* Final phase (10 days): Stop Cymbalta completely and continue taking Prozac every day for 10 more days, then stop Prozac.
Total planned timeline: ~6 weeks.
My Concerns & Questions for the Community:
Given my 13-year history, this feels quite fast to me, especially dropping from 90 mg to 60 mg to 30 mg in 2-week increments, as well as taking Cymbalta on alternating/every-other-day schedules during the bridge.
* Has anyone with long-term Cymbalta use tried a similar schedule?
* Are there specific red flags with alternating doses given Cymbalta's short half-life?
* How would you recommend discussing adjustments or a slower micro-taper / hyper-taper rate with my doctor?
Any insights, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

Hi @Irem, you should trust your gut instinct here. I agree that this taper is entirely too fast. Also, regarding the Prozac bridge, I know that some people do have success but it doesn't always work. https://taper.community/resources/blog/bridging-with-prozac-for-ssri-tapering
My personal opinion is that it's easier to stick with one drug and taper it slowly and Hyperbolically. Consistent doses each day, no skipping days, keeping things as stable as possible.
That's my two cents for what it's worth!

@Catina thank you for your insight.
I've seen here that sometimes it takes a couple of years to taper completely.
That's why it looked like a very aggressive way to taper in just 6 weeks.
I will talk to my doctor again and ask for a new plan 🙏🏼
