How do I move forward not trusting my doctor?
September 26, 2026··
I’m 5 months into recovery after a Hospitalist stopped Sertraline and Trazadone without my consent and knowledge. You can read my story on this site.
Lately I’ve been pondering how I proceed with my life now without medical assistance. The primary care doc I’ve loved for years simply doesn’t believe that my symptoms are recovery. He labels them Dementia. I’ve come to terms, thanks to this site, with the reality that many docs in the US just don’t understand anti-depressant withdrawal. I’m 82, smart, educated. These past months I’ve been researching like mad! Over and over I’ve been justified about my symptoms.
My frustration is that my Doctor is the one who should have been educating me and showing me compassion!
I know I am not alone! I’ve written about my journey and plan to send my paper to those in control here at my senior residence and in the City, and my family.
I’m continuing to edit and will publish soon.
Meanwhile, I need to seek out health care that I can trust, and change my insurance. I have help to do this, but it takes energy! It is coming back slowly, but I worry that if I require a doctor, there is no one I trust. I will not go to the hospital where the doctor removed my drugs. I will not go to a rehab of any kind near me. I just won’t give my body to anyone I don’t know. I don’t have family who know me. I have a few friends I trust, but they are busy too.
So, I feel a little stuck.
The philosophical part of this is a broken system which won’t and hasn’t changed in years ( I mean in the US). I have been a whistle blower all my life, but it has been in the care of those who are unhoused or poor. I wore down the wheels of my kids strollers pushing around protests for women’s rights. I’m trained in MLK’Jr’s non-violence. I’ve been an advocate for others for 50 years. Now, it seems that I need to advocate for myself. Not sure I know how.
