Hi, I'm Terry Fisk

September 8, 2026ยทยท
I recently started (9 weeks) mitizipine 15mgs. Tried it for 8 weeks but dries my throat. (I'm a singer) Doctor 10 days ago (at 8 weeks in) recommended 7.5mgs 10 days in and it's knocked me for 6. Insomnia, Cold Sweats. Etc. Doctor today said STOP taking it. take Diazipam for 3 days and come back and see me. I'm hope someone will clarify he is totally wrong and I need to taper.

Hi @Terry Fisk, welcome! Sorry about this. It's best to taper slowly off the Mirtazapine instead of abruptly stopping it and starting a benzo. And the initial taper was a 50% reduction, which is too large for most people to handle. We normally recommend a Hyperbolic taper of no more than 10% reductions per month. Some people can handle more as everyone is different. A suggestion would be to not make any more changes in your dose until thing stabilize. If you need help discussing it with him, here is some helpful information: https://taper.community/thread/dbb2cdbb-bb3d-4bb9-93ab-b33de4a3fd0b https://taper.community/resources/blog/how-to-talk-to-your-doctor-about-tapering https://taper.community/drugs/mirtazapine Let us know how things go! Venlafaxine (tapering) - Current dose 17.92 mg
Trazodone - 50 mg
Levothyroxine - 25 mcg

Hey Terry, welcome. A 50% cut right off the bat would knock most people for six, and stopping after only 10 days on the new dose is a fast move. It makes sense that you're feeling awful, especially with the added Diazepam in the mix. That throat dryness is a real drag for a singer. I hope the insomnia and sweats settle soon. Catina's right that a slower taper is usually the gentler path. It might be worth asking your doctor about a more gradual reduction to minimize the shock to your system. Hang in there, and let us know how you get on.
