Hi, I'm Metrohound

June 19, 2026··
I am actively tapering from lamotrigine. At the start of the year I was on 200mg. Since mid April, I have reduced by 25mg every 2-3 weeks. On 15th June I tapered to 100mg. Four nights later, I have some insomnia. I would like to be part of a community of people with lived experience of using and choosing to come off this medication. I hope to learn from others. I'm especially interested to know how other people, with a diagnosis of bipolar 1, have experienced and managed reducing the dosage of lamotrigine. It would be useful to know how long people have taken the medication. Thank you.

Hi Metrohoud, and welcome! Nice to have you here. I personally have never taken Lamotrigine, but we have some information about it here: https://taper.community/drugs/lamictal https://taper.community/resources/blog/lamictal-withdrawal-symptoms-lamotrigine You can use the Learn section to read about Hyperbolic tapering. Right now, you're doing 12.5% reductions. If your symptoms begin to get worse, it may be a sign that you need to slow things down a bit or reduce by a lesser amount. Sometimes all the reductions can quickly add up and then hit us all at once, so I don't want that happening to you. Insomnia is a very common symptom while tapering (unfortunately, right?). Here are some links that I hope will help: https://taper.community/thread/fad854f7-f9a4-421d-b60f-bf11aa13a251 https://taper.community/resources/blog/how-to-sleep-during-benzo-withdrawal Regarding Bipolar, have you heard about using Metabolic Therapy for this? Many people are having complete remission of symptoms by using a ketogenic diet. It might be something to look into. We look forward to supporting you on your tapering and healing journey! Catina ❤️

Hi Metrohound! Congrats on the success thus far. As Catina said your reductions may have to decrease as you get to a lower dose. Looking forward to helping you get to 0! Keep us updated with check ins :)

Hello Catina and thank you for the links and support. I had completely forgotten I had joined in the middle of a night of extreme insomnia and rediscover I did two months later on another pronounced night of insomnia. I think I need to maintain my current dose of 50mg for perhaps a week longer than planned. I had a very jangled head today of confused synapses and tonight's insomnia could cripple tomorrow's work. Slowly, slowly catch the monkey. I have discussed and planned tapering with a community psychiatrist whom I actively engaged for this process. This seems to fit withdrawal symptoms rather than relapse so that's of comfort. I shall keep it slow and look for liquid medication for the final weaning. Now I'm reminded, it's great to know there is a community out there. Thank you

Thanks for your feedback and support Based Psychiatrist. Yup, it will be v incremental towards the end. Who knew I could be so patient. I think the one mug of coffee in the morning might have to be lost too....

Nice to hear from you again @Metrohound. Glad this community can assist you! Go as slowly as you need to, there's no rush. It sounds like you may have found a supportive psychiatrist, so that's good. I'm glad you realize that it's withdrawal and not relapse. When you did switch to liquid you'll want to do a gradual cross-over: https://taper.community/thread/3516b46d-50b6-4048-9abc-533356b74afe Keep us posted on how things are going!
