Hi, I'm Maria A.

August 25, 2026··
Currently tapering liquid Zoloft at 14.275 mg from 50 mg. Have taken 8 years consistently with a cold turkey withdrawal 3 years ago and reinstatement after many months of suffering and attempted polypharmacy. Was stable on 50 mg after reinstatement and held for almost a year. I then started my taper 2 years ago, first going from 50 to 25 mg with minimal issues. I hit a wall when I got to around 22 mg and held for a couple of months. I then started my current liquid micro taper in January of this year mixing a 1 mL solution of Zoloft with 39 mL of water. I then remove .05 daily which has been very successful until recently. One week ago, I started a new Zoloft liquid bottle and have hit either some withdrawal symptoms or side effects (not quite sure). What happened initially was I mixed the old liquid with the new liquid and started having issues. I then ordered a whole new bottle thinking I had messed up the formulation but still having significant issues. I confirmed with the pharmacy that it was from the same manufacturer and there is no indication there has been a change in the formulation. Since then, I've had severe nausea, gastro-issues, body temperature issues, anxiety, sadness, and general malaise. Thank goodness I am still sleeping which is normally the first thing to go in withdrawal. After a conversation with Dr. Mark Horowitz we decided the best course of action is to hold the 14.275 until I feel better for a couple of weeks. Currently holding and having waves and windows but still generally feeling unwell. I can't tell if it's withdrawal or if its side effects from this batch being more potent. I also had significant nausea and side effects when I first started the Zoloft and this is somewhat reminiscent of that but also similar to withdrawal so I can't tell which one it is and why this happened right now when the taper was going well. Anyways happy to be here and join this community.

Zoloft —50 mg to 15 mg — 8 years with a cold turkey and reinstatement in between— was liquid micro tapering, crashed at 14.275 mg and now holding at 15 mg.

Welcome Maria. That’s quite a journey, and consulting with Dr. Horowitz is a solid step. New bottles can absolutely hit differently even from the same manufacturer, so holding makes sense while your system adjusts. Since you’re still sleeping, that’s a good sign it’s more side effect than withdrawal. Keep tracking your waves and windows, and once you’re stable for a couple weeks, you’ll have a clearer picture. Please consider logging your daily symptoms in the check-in tool under My Taper, it’ll help you spot patterns. And don’t hesitate to share what you’ve learned with others here, your experience with reinstatement and a slow taper is exactly the kind of wisdom this community needs.

Thank you both for your kind words. Unfortunately, I’m still not well. The nausea and flu-like feelings persist. Luckily, I get a reprieve in the evenings from the symptoms but I’m beyond miserable and so frustrated this happened because I was being so cautious. I got labs done today just to rule out any infections or food poisoning too.

You're welcome. I'm sorry you're still not feeling well. Have you tried using chewable ginger tablets, ginger tea, or slippery elm for your nausea? The fact that it gets better in the evenings is a good sign that your body is able to get things right. I agree that it's best to hold for the time being until your body can sort things out. Have you checked out this from the Symptoms & Self-Care section? https://taper.community/thread/230a8c26-1cbb-41b8-806f-da294f25ed11 I'm sorry things are rough. Have you tried using a heating pad on your abdominal area? That can sometimes provide comfort. Also, some people find that using those motions sickness wrist bands help too. Another tip is to try cutting down on high histamine foods and see if that helps. These drugs affect histamine receptors, so things can get out of whack as we're tapering down. I've had to switch to a low-histamine diet or else I get severe heart palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia. High histamine can also cause nausea. https://taper.community/thread/7477057c-a9ba-44e3-8694-72672836b07d Keep us updated on how you're doing. I hope things ease up a bit soon! 💕

Unfortunately, I had a terrible night. I lost my sleep and didn’t sleep the entire night. Very nauseous and had cold sweats. Apparently I’m getting worse which confirms that I’ve probably hit some type of acute withdrawal.

Oh @Maria A., I'm so sorry to hear this! Hopefully tonight will be better for you. I know what it feels like to go an entire night without sleep. Be gentle with yourself today. Yes, it sounds like you've been caught in a wave of symptoms. It won't last forever, so hang in there. Definitely don't make any more changes with anything and just allow some time to pass. I hope things ease up for you soon. We're here anytime you need to reach out for support. You're not alone! 💜
