Hi @LivMiskey, and welcome to Taper Community! You definitely have your hands full with three little ones, and I know you want to be the best wife and mom you can be while trying to get off Prozac. Having a strong spiritual faith is something that has helped me as well.
Tapering can be challenging at times, but if we reduce very slowly and listen to our body we can be successful. If you're having significant symptoms, it may mean you need to reduce by a smaller amount or leave more time in between reductions. What percentage are you reducing by when you make a cut? Are you waiting at least four weeks between cuts? Please have a look at the Learn section to read more about Hyperbolic Tapering and Withdrawal.
Here's what ChatGPT said about hormones and breastfeeding:
🌿 Tapering, Withdrawal, and Hormones (For Moms—Especially Those Breastfeeding)
It’s very common to feel nervous about how tapering psychiatric medications might affect your hormones—especially if you’re a mom caring for little ones and breastfeeding. Your body is already doing so much, and the idea of adding another layer of change can feel overwhelming.
Let’s talk about this in a reassuring and realistic way.
⸻
🤍 Your Body Is Not Breaking
Tapering can temporarily affect the nervous system, and because the nervous system and hormones are closely connected, you might notice some fluctuations.
But this is important:
These changes are usually temporary. They are part of your body adjusting—not a sign of damage.
Your body is designed to find balance again.
⸻
🧠 Why Hormones Can Feel Different During a Taper
Psychiatric medications influence brain chemicals like serotonin, which also interact with hormones such as:
• Cortisol (stress response)
• Prolactin (important for breastfeeding)
• Estrogen and progesterone
• Thyroid hormones
As your brain adjusts during a taper, your body may need time to recalibrate these systems.
⸻
🤱 A Note for Breastfeeding Moms
If you’re breastfeeding, your hormones are already in a unique state:
• Prolactin is elevated to support milk production
• Ovulation and menstrual cycles may be delayed or irregular
• Sleep is often disrupted (which affects hormones too)
Adding a taper into the mix doesn’t mean something is wrong—it just means your body may need extra gentleness and time to adjust.
Many women taper successfully while breastfeeding, especially when they go slowly.
⸻
🌿 What You Might Notice (and what’s normal)
Not everyone experiences symptoms, but some temporary changes can include:
• Increased emotional sensitivity
• Sleep changes
• Fatigue or a “wired and tired” feeling
• Changes in menstrual cycle (if it has returned)
• Mild fluctuations in milk supply
These are usually signs of a sensitive, adjusting system—not hormone damage.
⸻
🛟 Ways to Support Your Body
If you’re tapering during this season of life, here are some gentle supports:
• Go slowly – this is the most important factor
• Hold your dose when needed – stability is healing
• Eat regularly – balanced meals help regulate blood sugar and cortisol
• Stay hydrated – especially important for breastfeeding
• Rest when you can – even small breaks matter
• Be kind to yourself – this is a lot to carry
⸻
🚩 When to Pause and Reassess
It’s okay to slow down or hold your taper if you notice:
• A significant drop in milk supply
• Severe insomnia
• Intense anxiety or depression
These are signals your body may need more time—not signs you’re doing something wrong.
⸻
💬 A Gentle Reminder
Your body has already done incredible things.
Pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding are massive hormonal transitions—and your body adapted.
It can adapt again.
⸻
🌼 You’re Not Alone
Many moms have walked this path and come through it. With a slow, thoughtful approach, your nervous system and hormones can settle and stabilize over time.
Healing isn’t always linear—but it is possible.
I hope all that information helps and let's you know what to expect. We're happy to have you here, and please let us know how best we can help and support you!
Warmly,
Catina ❤️
