Hi, I'm Lety

September 10, 2026··
I’m currently weaning off Effexor and I’m having horrible withdrawal symptoms from severe itchiness to hallucinations. Hoping to connect to other people going the same thing and find out what has help them.

Hi @Lety, welcome to Taper Community! I'm weaning off Effexor too, and it can be a difficult drug to withdraw from. The itchiness that you're having could be coming from having excess histamine. These drugs affect histamine receptors, so when we taper off our body can have a hard time handling histamine. You could try cutting out high-histamine foods to see if this helps. https://taper.community/thread/7477057c-a9ba-44e3-8694-72672836b07d https://www.mastzellaktivierung.info/downloads/foodlist/21_FoodList_EN_alphabetic_withCateg.pdf Happy to have you here! So my physician has me alternate between 150mg and 70mg every other day for 2 weeks-this is my 2nd week. Week 3 and 4 she wants me to be only on 70mg and then completely stop.

Oh no, please don't alternate days! I don't know why doctors give this horrible advice. That's why things are so bad for you right now. Keep your dose consistent every day and then do your reductions each month. You can read about Hyperbolic tapering in the Resources section. Even at very, very tiny doses these drugs still have big impacts on serotonin receptors. And telling you to cold-turkey at 70 mg is also very harmful advice! https://taper.community/thread/dbb2cdbb-bb3d-4bb9-93ab-b33de4a3fd0b With a few tweaks you should be feeling much more stable soon.
