Hi Kanyisa, Welcome to the community! Many people here are tapering off Effexor. I’m tapering off duloxetine myself, which is a similar medication. Regularly documenting your symptoms and your progress is essential for recognizing patterns over time. Most importantly: go slowly and let your symptoms guide the pace. At the lower doses in particular, reductions may need to become very small, with longer holds between them. The whole process can take months or even a few years. Tapering too quickly can lead to severe and potentially risky withdrawal symptoms. Stability before speed. There’s no need to rush to get off the medication!

We’re happy to help you by sharing our experience. 😊 Unfortunately, we still make mistakes too, because the nervous system can sometimes be unpredictable, especially once you get into the lower-dose range, below the usual minimum therapeutic dose. At that point, it can be necessary to go even more slowly and let your symptoms guide the pace. 🐢 A 50% reduction is huge! The nervous system may not be able to adapt to such a large change in such a short period of time, so it’s really not surprising that you reacted so strongly. That kind of reduction can be very difficult to tolerate. Sometimes you may also need to hold a dose for a very long time before making another change. ⏳ You know, strangely enough, this seems to be a worldwide phenomenon—many doctors simply don’t seem to have enough knowledge about how to taper these medications safely. The ones who have taken one of these medications themselves probably understand it much better. 😉 But try not to be angry with your doctor. I’m sure they’re simply doing what they were taught and acting according to their best knowledge and intentions. And you’ll still need regular prescriptions along the way. 😊 So there’s no need to make life any more difficult than it already is. Let’s just be grateful that we’ve finally found each other here and have access to information and shared experiences that so often match what we’re going through with incredible accuracy. 😄 Stability before speed! 🐢💪

I'm so glad! I wish I had done my homework about Effexor before I asked my doctor to try it. It would have saved me! Oh well, it's water under the bridge now. Yes, having the right knowledge and support from others will help us both as we taper off. We're in this together!
