Hi, I'm Heliose

July 2, 2026··
Hello, I’ve been on Prozac for a few months now. I have already tapered from 40mg to 20mg for the past 3 weeks. Problem is I have 20mg capsules which you can’t exactly just split. Is there a way to dissolve them in water etc in order to take 10mg? My body and mind are fine. No adverse reactions. Need advice to taper further.

Prozac — 20mg — 3 months — actively tapering | Wellbutrin — 300mg — 5 months — researching taper | Adderall — 40mg — 4 months — holding | Vistaril / Atarax — 20mg — 2 momths — holding | without clinician

Will you be able to get 10mg or is you doc not on your side regarding tapering? Are little beads in the capsule or pulver? In my Venlafaxine capsules are little beads and i‘m counting everyday the amount of beads i‘m removing from the capsule. As you have been on Prozac only a few months, tapering might be easer than after many years intake. But take care, it has a long half-life so you always need to wait some weeks after taper to see how your body reacts. Be more careful in lower dosages, and stick to hyperbolic tapering for now. Sadly i have not used dissolving in my tapers and am not sure if it works with your prozac brand. But you could try if it does at least dissolve completely. If you do this, always measure correctly with a syringe (like 10ml syringe). Maybe someone else has experience with prozac capsules here? All the best 👍💪🤗

off Stimulants (2000-2013)
off Fluoxetine (2010-2013)
off Lamotrigine (2013-2016)
off Quetiapain (2016-2020)

I’m a disabled vet and my psych is just loading me up with too many meds. I’ve gone through like 8 antidepressants and I’m tired of feeling sick all the time. Prozac specifically makes me very nauseous. I feel like I’m worse off with all this crap and my wife agrees. I won’t be able to get 10mg. I feel like this is my best chance to taper off. As, like stated, Prozac has a long half life. Making it easier for most people. So, I have two different Prozac capsules. One does have the beads in them. The refill I just got today looked like it has powder inside the capsule. I haven’t looked at the new ones too hard yet. Both are 20mg though.

Is it because your doctor won't prescribe it for you? The capsule with the beads inside will probably be easier to taper, so you may want to stick with that one. Are you taking brand-name Prozac or are you taking a generic version? If it's generic (fluoxetine), you'll want to make sure you get the same manufacturer for the duration of your taper. Let your pharmacy know this, and make sure the same manufacturer is used for each refill. People can have more withdrawal issues when the pharmacy uses different ones since the formulation is not always the same.

To be honest I haven’t told them I’m tapering. They want to move me to some more extreme measures like lithium treatment etc and I’m just not for it. All this stuff has made me more depressed in a weird way because I’m always exhausted or nauseous or you name it. Which makes me feel like a pos. I just don’t feel human anymore. Both capsules are just labeled fluoxetine. Pretty sure the VA always just prescribes generic for cost.

You know your body best, and no one can force you take something you don't want to take. These drugs can do a lot of damage, and many people find once they're off of them they feel much more normal again. They're not for everyone.
