Hi, I'm Frankie

September 7, 2026··
Hi, I've been on seroquel for 20 some years. I was initially put on it for sleep. I have tapered from 100mg to 85 mg and am having severe jaw clenching and movement, severe stiff neck and trapeze muscle to the point I cannot work. If I cut by 50 % I have had episodes of severe chest pain, chest vibrations, shortness of breath, itching, agitation, anger and extreme dizziness and sleeplessness. My kaiser psychologist said there should be no withdrawal symptoms.

Hi @Frankie, welcome! I'm so glad you're here so you can kind of reign things in and slow things down. Your body is letting you know that your reductions are much too large. If might be a good idea to not make any further changes until things improve a bit. Once you're stable, then you can try a much smaller reduction. In Hyperbolic tapering, usually nothing more than a 10% cut is recommended. You can learn about this in the Resources section. Unfortunately, most mental health 'professionals' know little about withdrawal and how to properly taper. We look forward to supporting you on your tapering journey off Seroquel. Catina 🩷

Frankie, 20 years on seroquel is a long road, and that jaw clenching and neck stiffness sound miserable, especially when it's keeping you from work. You're not crazy for feeling this, and your Kaiser psychologist is flat out wrong that there are no withdrawal symptoms, they're very real and what you're describing fits the pattern of cuts that are too big for a drug your brain has relied on for two decades. Catina's advice is sound, and I'd echo that holding steady where you are for now, letting things settle, is the wisest move before any further changes. When you do resume, a much smaller reduction than half or even 15mg is typically what people on this forum have found tolerable. Since you're just starting out, it's worth logging your daily symptoms in the Taper Plan tool here, even just a few notes on jaw tightness and sleep, because over the next few weeks you'll see patterns that will be gold when you talk to your doctor again. And once you're further along, don't forget to pop into other newcomers' intros, your experience with this drug is exactly the kind of hard-won knowledge someone else here desperately needs to hear.
