Hi, I'm Catina! I was a member of Surviving Antidepressants and served as a Peer Mentor.

February 25, 2026··
I started taking psychiatric drugs back in 1994 for severe PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) because I was under the impression I had "low" serotonin. I have a complex history of many cold drug switches and going on and off different ones with no knowledge that it could do me any harm. When I finally reached menopause and the PMDD was no longer an issue, I began my first attempt to withdraw from the two drugs I was taking at the time - Prozac and Trazodone - and ended up in a psychiatric facility due to severe withdrawal symptoms. I had no knowledge about proper tapering or withdrawal effects, and no doctor ever informed me. I promptly restarted back again on the two drugs. After some time passed and I was experiencing anxiety - which in hindsight was from my failed taper - I asked my doctor to try Effexor as it was an antidepressant I hadn't tried before. BIG MISTAKE! I didn't realize what could happen if you missed a dose, which is what happened to me in October 2019. I experienced severe withdrawal symptoms for three months and went through utter hell. It was then that my eyes were finally opened to the dangers of these drugs and I knew I had to break free once and for all. Surprisingly enough, I was able to taper off lorazepam (Ativan) without any major issues. However, tapering an antidepressant has proved to be the most challenging thing I've ever endured. I'm currently taking Trazodone and Venlafaxine, the latter of which I have been trying to taper since March 2020. My nervous system is very sensitized and dysregulated due to decades of psych drug use, cold switches, failed tapers, and kindling. Hopefully one day I'll be able to write my success story about how I won my battle against chemical neurotoxins. Catina, welcome — and thank you for being here. We're grateful to have someone with your experience and heart in this community. Looking at your experience I can tell that you know that the windows and waves are brutal. One thing I'd encourage you to do is start logging your dose and mood regularly. When things get hard it's easy to lose perspective on where you actually are. The chart keeps you honest and grounded. Looking forward to your success story. Ill be here for every step between now and then. One thing I'd love to know from you; across SA, BenzoBuddies, and everything you've seen in these communities over the years, what's made the biggest difference for people? What did the best peer support actually look like when it worked? We're still shaping what this community becomes and I can't think of anyone better to ask.

Thank you so much for your warm welcome and kind words! Also, thanks for the advice about tracking things better; I admit I'm not the best at it. I think what helps people the most are:
  • Having accurate knowledge about proper tapering and how to handle withdrawal-related symptoms.
  • Feeling like they are being heard, validated, supported, and loved. So many people experience gaslighting from doctors and their own family members. Having people that understand and support them can make all the difference in the world.
  • Keeping in mind that that their body knows how to heal. Even during the darkest times, holding on to this truth can help get them through.

You can use the My Taper tab to track your symptoms, mood, and dose; as well as take standardized depression and anxiety tests there. To address your bullets, 1. Totally agreed, would you say the Learn tab does a good job? Want to know that were giving people good info, according to your experience. 2. Again agreed, that was the motivation behind this, was a shame SA went read only. 3. EXACTLY, thats why check ins are shared to drug specific forums, so you can see others come out of the holes. Sorry for bombarding with questions but i think youre a great person to ask

I'm so sorry! I'm just seeing your questions now...forgive me. Yes, I think the Learn tab does a good job. It's very informative and easy to understand. I'm so glad you have created a space to help people through this difficult process. It's so appreciated! Yes, it's a shame SA went to read-only mode.

Catina, YOU are so appreciated. You have no idea how happy it makes me to see life in this community, life that is a direct by-product of your and other members efforts. I have so much energy to help people get off psych drugs, and it motivates me to see others feel the same. I get a little neurotic at times, now im pretty fixated on making sure everything is technologically smooth in this website, and providing support to those here; making my work and family obligations a little hectic. It gives me calm knowing youre in here with your great attitude and big brains! Looking forward to learn more with you

That would help a bit haha! Thanks for all your kind words of encouragement. Ever since I was harmed by Venlafaxine, I've been passionate about helping others in their battle to free themselves of these horrible drugs. The harmed community is growing and our voices will not be ignored.
