Hi, I'm AnnLou

July 20, 2026··
On Fluoxetine for 30 years. Fluoxetine is interacting with new heart meds (begun following recent hospitalization) per cardiologist, causing sleepiness, fogginess, fear of falling. I need to get off Fluoxetine so I can get back to my previous activity level. I had gone down to 40 mg per day and am working on 30 per day now. I am concerned about negative results and want to hear others' experience.

Prozac — 50 mg — 25 years — actively tapering

Hi @AnnLou...welcome to Taper Community. I'm sorry about the interaction between your two drugs. What is the name of the heart medication and why have you been put on it? I understand you wanting to get off the Prozac, but you've been on it for many years so it could take a little time to taper it safely and allow your brain to adjust. So far you've been doing a linear taper and have reduced by 25%. How long have you been at 30 mg? Are you having any withdrawal symptoms currently? Prozac stays in the body longer than other antidepressants, so any withdrawal effects could be delayed in showing up. Normally we recommend tapering by no more than 10% of the previous months' dose in a Hyperbolic manner, but since you're having a reaction I understand you wanting to get off. If we go too fast though, it can increase our chances of withdrawal symptoms. I guess you'll need to find a balance for yourself. Here is some information about Prozac: https://taper.community/drugs/prozac Do you have any specific questions? Please let the community know. Wishing you the best. Catina ❤️

Venlafaxine (tapering) - Current dose 17.92 mg
Trazodone - 50 mg
Levothyroxine - 25 mcg

Hi @AnnLou, I was wondering if there is an alternative heart medication they could put you on that doesn't interact with Prozac. It might be something to consider, especially if you start having problems with tapering too fast. Let us know how you're doing when you get a chance....thanks!
