Getting off Prozac and Wellbutrin
Here’s a clean, well-flowing version that keeps all your key points and questions while making it easier to read:

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for insight from others who have experience tapering long-term antidepressants.
I’ve been on Prozac since 2004 and Wellbutrin XL since 2014. At the time treatment started, my TSH was undetectable and my symptoms were thought to be secondary to thyroid issues (I had I-131 treatment in 2005 following hyperthyroidism). Back then, my only symptom was occasionally withdrawing and not wanting to leave my room for a few days while in college.
In 2019, I asked about tapering but was told I would likely need to stay on these medications long term, without much explanation. Not understanding the risks, I abruptly stopped Prozac, Wellbutrin, and Adderall. This led to severe symptoms, which resolved after reinstating Prozac and Wellbutrin. From 2019 to 2025, I was stable on Prozac 40 mg and Wellbutrin XL 450 mg.
Despite being considered “stable,” I experienced emotional numbing, irritability, rage, and personality changes that didn’t feel like me. That’s what led me to want to come off these medications.
In January 2025, under my psychiatrist’s guidance, I began tapering using a linear approach, which I now believe was too aggressive. Over about 8 months, I reduced Prozac from 40 mg to 10 mg and Wellbutrin XL from 450 mg to 150 mg. Initially, this was manageable.
Symptoms began when I was advised to take Prozac every other day and alter the Wellbutrin XL dose. At that point, I developed panic and intrusive looping thoughts. I made several dose adjustments trying to stabilize, not realizing my nervous system had become sensitized, and that additional medications and supplements may have contributed.
I’ve now stopped all supplements and have been holding Prozac 10 mg for a little over 4 months and Wellbutrin XL 150 mg for a little over 5 months. I still experience brief waves of intrusive looping thoughts every few days, but overall I am gradually improving.
These thoughts feel like intrusive, unwanted “harm-type” or suicidal-themed loops, along with a constant sense of scanning my environment for danger. I don’t agree with the thoughts and don’t want to act on them—they feel more like a misfiring alarm system—but they are very exhausting. At times I feel overwhelmed and burned out, but I do want to live.
This has been going on for about 8 months to varying degrees and has been the most difficult symptom for me.
I have a few key questions:
* Could this be considered protracted withdrawal, and/or did I potentially sensitize/kindle my system by increasing and decreasing doses multiple times?
* Do these kinds of intrusive looping thoughts typically resolve with continued holding, or only once tapering progresses?
* Do I need to wait for this symptom to fully resolve, or is it reasonable to begin tapering once things feel more stable/manageable?
* In your experience, are these types of intrusive thoughts considered the same as typical depressive symptoms, or something more specific to withdrawal?
In terms of next steps, I’m unsure how to proceed safely. I’m still on commercially available doses and want to avoid destabilizing again—stability is my top priority.
I’m also unsure which medication would be safer to taper first—Prozac or Wellbutrin.
My taper coach has suggested that, since I haven’t lost control, I could begin a gradual hyperbolic taper, possibly even tapering both medications together (since one is more activating and the other more calming). The idea would be a very slow daily micro taper, starting with one and then introducing the other.
However, I’ve also read that it’s best to taper one medication at a time, and I’ve seen some mention that microtapers can “catch up” with you over time—so I’m unsure what approach is safest.
If anyone has experience with:
* tapering Prozac vs. Wellbutrin first
* micro tapering vs. cut-and-hold
* tapering one vs. two medications together
* or dealing with intrusive looping thoughts during withdrawal
I would really appreciate your insight.
Also, if you have any recommended books, podcasts, YouTube channels, or resources that helped you through this process, I would love to hear those as well.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond 🤍
Current medications: Fluoxetine 10 mg, Wellbutrin XL 150 mg, Tirosint 88 Mcg, Cytomel 15 mg, Metformin 500 mg Bid
01 Jan 2025 Prozac 40mg; Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Feb 2025 Prozac 30mg (-25%); Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Mar 2025 Prozac 20mg(-33%); Wellbutrin XL 450mg
01 Apr 2025 Prozac 20mg; Wellbutrin XL 300mg (-33%)
01 May 2025 Prozac 20mg; Wellbutrin XL 150mg (-50%)
15 Jun 2025 Prozac 10mg(-50%); Wellbutrin XL 150mg
01 Aug 2025 Prozac 10mg every other day; Wellbutrin ~75mg (splitting XL 150mg)
22 Aug 2025 Panic attack and intrusive thoughts → took Xanax 0.25mg once; psychiatrist advised reinstating Prozac 10mg daily and Wellbutrin XL 150mg. Within a few days I felt somewhat better.
Between 22 Aug 2025 and 14 Nov 2025: a handful of times (exact dates unclear) during panic episodes, I took an extra Prozac 20mg and Xanax 0.25mg. Last Xanax dose: 1/4 of 0.25mg tablet on 10 Jan 2026.
I was also taking supplements and Ozempic (last dose: 06 Nov 2025), which I believe contributed to my destabilization despite previously tolerating them. I had not yet found the withdrawal communities and continued to experience panic and intrusive thoughts, so my psychiatrist advised dose increases:
01 Oct 2025 Wellbutrin XL 300mg (+100%) (brief increase; caused palpitations → reduced)
21 Oct 2025 Wellbutrin XL 150mg (-50%)resumed and held
01 Nov 2025 Prozac 15mg (+50%) (brief increase; worsened palpitations/SI → reduced)
14 Nov 2025 Prozac 10mg (-33%)resumed and held
Since 21 Oct 2025: holding Wellbutrin XL 150mg
Since 14 Nov 2025: holding Prozac 10mg
After this point, I focused on eliminating other medications and supplements, which is also when I found the withdrawal communities.
