Long-standing Los Angeles-area compounder that people who have tapered listed among pharmacies filling by mail; it now accepts California patients and prescribers only.
Member pharmacies searchable by location. PCCA’s clinical pharmacists advise member pharmacies on tricky formulations, such as an extended-release capsule.
Any prescriber can write one — it doesn’t have to be a psychiatrist. It needs “Compounded medication” at the top, then the drug, strength, form, quantity and directions.
2
Call two or three pharmacies
Not every compounder makes every drug, and prices vary a lot. Ask the questions below before you send the prescription.
3
Check the cost and your insurance
Some plans cover compounded drugs, often only with a “medical necessity” note from your prescriber. A daily dose that no tablet or capsule comes in makes the case easier.
4
Plan the switch with your prescriber
A new form can feel different even at the same dose. Many people change form first and hold steady before the next reduction, so the two changes don’t blur together.
Questions to ask when you call
1
Do you compound my medication for tapering — as a liquid, as capsules, or both?
2
For an extended-release drug: can you make extended-release capsules at a custom strength?
Effexor XR, Pristiq, Seroquel XR and similar can’t become a liquid without losing the slow release. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is different: its beads are coated against stomach acid, so ask how they’d keep that protection.
3
Do you make it from pure drug powder or from crushed tablets — and which manufacturer’s?
Switching source can change how a dose feels. Ask them to note it so refills match.
4
What else goes in? Can you leave out flavours, dyes, sugar, alcohol or lactose?
Worth asking if you react to additives.
5
How long does it keep, and does it need the fridge?
Some liquids last only a couple of weeks.
6
What will it cost for a month’s supply, and do you bill my insurance?
7
Can you mail it to my state or province?
Pharmacies need a licence for each state they ship to, and controlled drugs such as benzodiazepines often can’t be mailed.
8
Will you include an oral syringe (0.5 mL or 1 mL) and help me with the measuring?
Your prescriber fills in the strength and directions — this is just the format pharmacies expect.
